"Home cooking in large portions."

"I’ve come here to eat not to muck about."

"My Grandma used to cook like this for me."

"This is how people ate in the olds days."

- these are the most common comments the restaurant has received over the years

Vallis Aurea is located in the very heart of Zagreb, at the foot of the Zagreb Funicular.  Ever since 1994, when it was taken over by the Rešetar family, the philosophy of the restaurant has been the same:  homemade, traditional, fresh and affordable food.  A long time ago, the restaurant, which was then the “Kutjevo” inn, was a gathering place for young students, poets and writers.

We would especially like to mention the academic, painter and writer Mr Matko Peić, in whose honour we  placed a  memorial plaque and small library with his best known works, which you can read while waiting for your lunch.

Today, Vallis Aurea is a gathering place for young business people, tradesmen, writers, families with children, an increasing number of tourists from all over the world, and all those who have had enough of artificial fast food and who instead want homemade food and a relaxed atmosphere.

The New York Times wrote about us a while back, and we are included every year in the famous tourist guide Lonely Planet. You can also read articles written by bloggers and food critics below.

If you feel like having authentic Croatian homemade food with a glass of Croatian beer or wine, which in the summer months you can have on our pleasant terrace, come to Vallis Aurea; you won’t regret it.
